A22-On-line water toxicity monitoring: State-of-the-art and beyond.
Description:
On-line, automatic, continuous toxicity monitoring of water has become a major aspect of environmental and human health surveillance. The symposium or platform session will include international experts (including those from the US, Europe, Latin America and Asia) to address known on-line biomonitoring systems such as the Multispecies Freshwater Biomonitor, the Daphnia Test, Mussel Monitor, various bacterial and algal automated systems. Speakers will also introduce new monitoring technologies that will address unique biological systems, applications to air and solid media monitoring, biosensors, the virtual organism concept, and stationary and mobile platforms. The integration of chemical and biological systems into a wide-area network of reporting and alarm systems is also planned. The importance of this information is paramount for guarding the national security of water supply systems, the environment, as well as the growing necessity to understand the toxicity of complex mixtures. The intended audience will be watershed managers, public health personnel, homeland security departments, municipal drinking water and wastewater treatment managers in addition to scientists from academia.
Topics:
1. Known on-line monitoring systems.
2. New monitoring technologies that can be adapted to on-line, automated systems including
(a) biological systems;
(b) biosensors;
(c) platform types.
3. System integration into wide-area networks, reporting and alarm systems.
Abstract submission:
Please submit abstracts through the SETAC website http://www.setac.org before May 31, 2004 and at the same time please email a copy of the abstract to chairperson Dr. F.M. Butterworth [fbirri@comcast.net]. The program will become available in late June.
Book publication:
